New Rolls-Royce Ghost Has 220 Pounds Of Sound-Deadening Materials

Rolls-Royce continues its preparations for the launch of the next-generation Ghost, scheduled for later this year. In addition to the final animated clip from the Ghost’s teaser campaign, the automaker has also released initial details about some of the vehicle’s comfort features. More precisely, the information focuses on the complete serenity of the cabin.
To ensure no unwanted noises from the 6.75-liter V12 engine – if there are any at all – reach the cabin, the acoustic team installed a double-skinned bulkhead section to separate the engine compartment from the interior. Cavities in the roof, boot, floor, and doors were filled with more than 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of sound-absorbing materials.
In addition, double-glazed windows with a clear composite center sheet were used all around, as well as special tires lined with lightweight acoustic insulation foam. But most of all, the sedan’s aluminum-rich underpinnings contribute to a quieter environment.

“The extraordinary acoustic quality of the new Ghost is the result of significant engineering developments and fastidious attention to detail, but it really is underpinned by the marque’s proprietary aluminum architecture,” Tom Davis-Reason, new Ghost Acoustic Engineering Lead, comments. “There is simply no way we could have created such an acoustically refined environment using a steel platform.”
Not all noise is unwanted, however. Upon early testing, the acoustic team discovered thplete silence creates a very unnatural feeling and decided to generate a “whisper” – “a soft undertone that clients experienced as a single, subtle note,” as the manufacturer describes it. Or, basically, each component had to be tuned to a specific resonant frequency.
The 2021 Ghost is “entirely new” and built from the ground up. It shares nothing but the Spirit of Ecstasy emblem and the door-stowed umbrellas with its predecessor. The suspension alone took approximately three years to develop and Rolls-Royce promises it’ll deliver a balance between comfort and dynamics that’s unrivaled.
